Would you be interested in a low mileage Subaru only driven on a few weekends a year by a Grandfather?  Probably not unless it was this one.  JC Meynet First bought the STI in 2006 because he wanted a practical 4-Door sporty car to drive his grandkids around in.  The STI stayed stock for 30,000 miles and a year until, JC a former motocross racer tried his hand at autocross and Redline Time Attack in Street class.  It was then the bug of speed bit and the car began its transformation into the Redline Time Attack Modified/ Super Lap Battle AWD Limited and NASA TTU class monster you see here.

 The EJ25 is stroked to 2.6 liters with a Crower crank and rods.  JE or CP 100mm pistons in different compression ratios are used depending on the situation.  Portflow Engineering modified the cylinder heads with 1mm oversize valves.

The car is the brainchild of JC Meynet, AQ Motorsports and HarmonMotive. JC chose the Modified and limited classes so the car could retain its street car roots. Take out the cage and add a few of the interior bits and this monster could be street driven. The engine is fortified using a BC 2.6 liter stroker kit with Crower crank and rods.  100mm JE 8.5:1 compression or 9.2:1 CP pistons are used depending on the conditions.  The heads are ported and fitted with 1mm oversize valves, stainless on the intake and inconel on the exhaust using a radius valve job.  The intake manifolds are ported with the TGV valves deleted by Portflow Engineering.  The normally open deck Subaru case halves are modified to be closed deck for better integrity and head sealing and the block is clearanced by Outfront Motosports.

Since a Subaru comes with a swirl pot/surge tank stock, this can is the overflow tank.  The intake manifolds are ported and the TGV swirl valves are removed.  The big fuel rails and lines feed huge 1600cc injectors, needed for E85 operation.  E85 requires at least 30% more fuel delivery than gasoline.  E85 has about a 50% higher latent heat of vaporization than gasoline so it contributes a lot to charge cooling.  This makes it a good turbo fuel.

The lubrication system is critical for a time attack car if the engine is to live. The Subaru is no exception with a high volume oil pump with 12mm gears, a Moroso accumulator (basically the same thing as an accusump), a Moroso baffled high capacity oil pan and a Griffin cooler. A Griffin Radiator is also used. An AQMS recirculating oil separator/breather tank solves a common Subaru problem of creating a lot of oil mist in the blowby.  Motul handles the lubrication.

 Fuel pressure regulator and pressure sender unit for the data logger.  The aluminum can is a self draining oil mist separator.  Subaru's are known for puking a lot of oil out the breather and this can recovers the oil and puts it back into the crankcase.  This is an essential thing for any track driven Subie because it is possible to puke a big part of the sump capacity out the breather in a single session!

Different pistons for different situations? You make it sound like changing pistons is as easy as swapping spark plugs!

Sounds like quite a bit. I remember reading a number of years ago that E85 is a corrosive fuel and eats plastic. If this is true how do you go about installing an E85 system into a pump gas car? Is MotoIQ going to be showing us this anytime soon?

I'm surprised Mike Kojima doesn't own Hellafunctional, great name for a shop.

If they left it in to keep things simple electronically, I can understand and that's a very valid point. But, I would think they'd remove it for better control at the limit.

Modern late model ABS gives you better control at the limit, if its legal in a race class, its stupid not to use it.

Thanx for the great write up MK and nice comments from others!

The car's major build up and transformation into a race car was done at a time when a dual master/pedal box was not allowed in our class. Maybe someday but for now, our system works pretty well ;-)

As noticed (weight...), we still have many improvements to do, most of which need more attention than our already excellent brakes. Only so much time and money available. (donations can be sent to......)

Sweet car, love the article. Lots of questions though! What's the deal w/the NACA duct on the passenger side? Near the Church logo... is that for the intake? Why didn't you guys go with WRC Fenders or a widebody kit? I'd imagine those would be wide enough to accomodate your wheels and such. But great idea to use 240z flares... I guess if it's cheap, quick, and gets the job done. Are they an interim/cheap solution?

I'm curious about that "speed tape." What's the idea behind it? Less bumper openings = higher straightline speed? The rear diffuser looks interesting too...almost looks like you guys used Coleman's Garage Tips idea for reusing corregated plastic signs to make the diffuser! Say it ain't so!

Yes, the naca duct feeds right to the air filter. WRC/widebody fenders would be awesome to have, but that stuff is $texas. Hacking the fenders and putting on flares isn't pretty but it works. All the underbody paneling and diffuser is made from alumalite.

After we wrecked up the front end at Subefest our replacement front bumper was wide open. I covered everything in tape to hopefully reduce the air pressure in the engine bay and wheel wells, which should make the cooling system more effective and increase front downforce. At superlap we had a problem getting the car up to temp so I taped off some of the upper grill and it actually made the car loose. I really need to have Andrew Brilliant come by and tell us what to do. Maybe he takes payment in coors light...

Great in depth article. And kudos for keeping it real and shooting the car "as is".

There are so many aero goodies that I see on this car that I've been too lazy to finish on my car. Did you guys make that hood vent yourself or was it already there as a styling feature and you made it hellafunctional?

Jamal, I'm not surprised that closing off the upper grill caused the car to get loose. My theory is that the openings created lift and by closing them off, you reduced the lift which caused the loose condition. But it looks like the Kognition wing is adjustable, so that seems like it would have been a simple adjustment to offset the reduced lift on the front. The stock hook scoop on STIs creates a lot of lift too.

Yeah I think so too. We ran fastest the first lap of the first session, and I figured the tape thing out at the end of the day. If we'd taped the front and added more wing off the bat it jc would have gone even faster. We even tried did a test day two weeks earlier so it would have been a bit more dialed in had the motor not gone pop after three laps

Hasn't been a hood scoop on the car for a long time, and I I want to make the duct larger and angle the coolers forward.

You have to copy the old text, then delete your post, then re paste it to edit, its sorta lame but it how this software works.

I think the looseness could come from two things, it made the front aero more effective or increased the front skin type drag which moved the center of pressure forward. I think its the first.

^^^ Agree with the observations re: causes for looseness. Add to that the fact that I was trying harder than ever to improve on our early hot lap and I may have been simply overdriving the car a bit. Being almost 2 seconds faster than ever before put me/us in new territory to explore. Now that we can do 48's, 50's feel effortless to click off. Looking forward to the data article which may shed some light on this as well.

Berk, that hood had a smallish slot above/behind the radiator which helped a little. We then made the opening much larger, fabbed up a "chimney", and increased the size of the leading lips/Gurneys so that they create more draw. All this helped but we have more room for improvements (as always....)

BD, had step-grandkids ;-) and I only act 16....
