Without a doubt the 2010 Redline Time Attack season was filled with some drama and controversy but in the end the new management at Redline made good on their word and delivered an unbelievable year of racing.   Round 10 held at Auto Club Speedway would bear witness to a new record in ALL classes as well as a new overall track record which is definitely a sign that US based Time Attack has no intention of slowing down.

Auto Club Speedway is located in the heart of Southern California, the mecca of cool cars and the birthplace of the sport compact tuning industry which fills the vast majority of the Redline Time Attack field.  The track configuration used has been given the nickname “roval” (roadcourse + oval) where high horsepower cars tend to fare better.  Auto Club Speedway is a more spectator friendly track where you can more readily absorb the sounds of the race where the shape of the huge grandstands act like a giant megaphone for the machines orbiting around you.

The pit area for Time Attack teams is comprised of the same garages that pro level motorsports teams would use.  The pit area at this track is very walkable and you can get a good look at all of the crews in action.

As a spectator you are able to get right up close and personal to the drivers, teams, and their time attack machines.   This is Formula D Star Kyle Mohan’s Drift Class championship winning Mazda FC.  Look for Kyle and his Mazdatrix’s boss Dave Lemon to compete in MotoIQ’s MPTCC Series next year!

One of the biggest stories of the weekend came from the crew at GST Motorsports who set a new record on the course with a time of 1:35.548 (check out our awesome in car data footage here!) .  Jeff Westphal , the artist formerly known as the G-Stig bested the times set by Billy Johnson  and the FXMD NSX by over 0.5 second in the ultra competitive Super Modified Class where the best and the brightest of our tuning industry fight tooth and nail for 1/10’s.

A very well deserved win for champagne soaked driver Jeff Westphal with Miss Redline Time Attack 2011 Michele Farias.

GST’s overall win and new overall record goes to show you that even without the fancy carbon skinned car and $250,000 car hauler setup this team is able to make do with what they have and produce record breaking results.  In case you were wondering their “transporter” setup consists of a Dodge pickup truck and your standard enclosed trailer.  The GST car started life as a non-turbo Subaru Impreza L and blue booked for about $1500…. if it was in excellent condition.

Here is the unmasked G-Stig giving us a product demonstration in the pits.  These Kognition wings will generate over 500lbs of downforce on the oval and as you can see from the photo there is no noticeable deflection.
