Revenge of the Nerd, Sorry China!

By Mike Kojima

Yes, China the land of crappy copycat parts and shady business practices offers up a new plague, this one aimed straight at MotoIQ.  For the past two weeks we have been bombarded by Chinese spammers on a daily basis who are attempting to fill our article comments section with crap and have been probing our forums and community sections as well.  It's a whole slew of Chinese coming at us from many IP's.

We have been trying to not let this disrupt our operations or inconvenience our users but the hoard has been adapting to our defense strategies and been costing us many hours of cleanup work every day.  The fact that many of you haven't noticed the spam is because we have been trying not to let it sit around long enough to be seen.  If our article volume has been down, blame the spammers.

So we have no choice but to block all traffic from China for now until we find a solution that will not hamper the user friendliness of the site.  I would like to apologize to our legit Chinese fans but when 95% of the traffic coming from your country is a spam attack, we have no other choice.  We are really sorry but we can't let the rest of our users suffer and let  our site quality decline because we are wasting time dealing with this plague.chinese spam

I moderate Hondclub.com and even though we only have a handful of dedicated members, we get hit by about half a dozen new spam posts a day. It really sucks, it takes away from everyone's fun, and can be hazardous to your health. I accidentally hit one of HC's spam links while I was deleting it and ended up with a nasty virus for, what else? An antivirus company. Shut down my whole lapatop, I couldn't open programs or web pages, the virus said everything was infected and I needed this miracle anti virus software. Thanks China.

I differentiate Chinese people in general and modern Chinese people in China with dodgy business practices by calling the latter "chinamen". Chinamen, to me at least, are the ones that copy everything and anything, take advantage of western business practices and unspoken and written rules of product design and manufacturing.

I am of Chinese descent, but 100% of my family has been in the US since 50 years ago. Naturally I think more like an American than a chinaman.

With that being said, FUCK THE CHINAMEN! BURN IN HELL.
Wednesday, September 01, 2010 8:46 AM
A lot of Chinese people have no morals what so ever. But that's what you get when the majority of the population is kept poor and uneducated by their dictatorship. They seriously need another revolution. If only they had the right to bare arms like us. Even with half the population armed, over 600,000,000, they could crush their military dictatorship quite easily.

We really have to even the trade deficit or raise tariffs on China because right now we're on the losing end. So what if that Chinese shit is super cheap, you still can't afford their super cheap shit without that job that is now out sourced to China. Even if things from China cost a penny, how are you going to afford it with zero income.

RE:@eric hus "I am of Chinese descent, but 100% of my family has been in the US since 50 years ago. Naturally I think more like an American than a chinaman."

Come on now Eric, no need to resort to racial slurs. Educated black people won't resort to using the "n" word to describe their unliked portion of their race. So you shouldn't either.

And I'm speaking from a 1st generation Chinese who also despises the stereotypical Chinese you mention. Yes, they are low class, selfish, self serving, and unethical people who make it harder for the rest of us to assimulate. I'd just call them FOBs. Of course I use that term you mentioned also in my head, just like I use other terms for other ethnicities in my head also. haha. I'm sure we all do too. I hate whichever race screwed with me last. haha. And it's all across the board, asians, whites, blacks, latinos...etc.

But using it in a public forum gives the real racists more reason to justifiy it's daily use.

Thursday, September 02, 2010 8:54 AM
OK Jeff, if you guys post something about 22" spinners and unsprung weight, then someone mentions the "n" word in a comment, I dare you guys to let the post through. "Chinamen" is a racial slur. As much as I like your site, people like Eric Hsu helps lowers it to the trash class... no matter how he justifies it's use.

HJC: so its ok to think it, but its not ok to say it? That's two faced. Does it make you a better person because you don't say it, but think it? Perhaps it does since I am the one bringing motoiq down "...to the trash class..." Personally I don't think the word is all that bad being that it literally describes what they are which are men from China. The n-word is nothing like that. I think words like "chink", "gook", or any other derivative would be more similar to the n-word.

Here's some trivia on the word: the word "Chinamen" came about sometime in the 1840's during the California gold rush. Chinese migrant workers from southern China (mostly Canton) were brought in because they were bad ass with dynamite (don't forget the Chinese invented gun powder over a thousand years ago when they were innovative people). It was good money for them because they could bring money back home after working for a couple years and live like ballers back home. Chinese migrant workers were working in the mines, building rail roads, doing laundry, and cooked in restaurants. They basically helped connect the west coast to the rest of the country. Now back to the original programming...

Lol HJC, I dare you to be the one to do it! We don't manually approve the comments, hence the reason for this article and our countermeasures. Most of our readers are pretty level-minded mature adults and we've never removed comments that weren't deliberately slanderous or handbag spam. You wanna see the word "nigger" go read the comments in Eric's "Tech Calls" BTD post. We didn't delete those posts and for the most part it was a pretty mature conversation (also lambasting Eric's choice of words). If you haven't read it, take a look. We value everyone's opinion but it should shed some light on the subject so we don't have to rehash it all again :)

Personally, I don't mind it, but I'm a white male and I could never be hurt by a racial comment--so I don't generally get a say in these conversations. As an owner of the business, I like what Eric writes, I appreciate what he contributes and who he brings to the site (for free too I might add!) He says what he wants, about whatever he wants without apology. It's not always about cars, obviously not always PC and we may lose a handful of readers because of him but I know we'd lose a lot more without him.

Why thanks, whitey. It's good to know once in a while that I am appreciated by someone.

For the record, it was not me that used the n-word in that post. I don't think the word nor use the word. It was some dude extremely pissed at me for using the word "faggot" in a non-gay context.

Thursday, September 02, 2010 11:03 PM
I don't really see the big deal with this supposedly racist comment. I never use the stated word, but I also knew exactly what Mr. Hsu was talking about in his post. He wasn't blatantly being racist out of hate, he was making a point.

The way I read it, Eric was differentiating between the vast majority of good people and the few cheap-ass scammers out there. We have the same thing in American, and they're called "white trash".

I'm white. If I call a poor, uneducated man who makes illegal liquor "white trash" am I being racist? Most would say no.

Yeah, if a gay guy called another gay guy a carpet muncher in order to put down his gayness, I too should get super offended because then that becomes a derogatory term for heterosexual males.
Friday, September 03, 2010 12:14 AM
Chinaman is a derogatory word but so is FOB.
Friday, September 03, 2010 12:57 AM
I looked at the Tech Calls comments and I would have to agree with Shawn D's comments.

Look, it's your site, you can do whatever you want. As a reader, I'm just letting you guys know that such language just reflects upon your level of class. If you guys want to be known as a bunch of foul mouthed, unprofessional, bigoted jackasses, so be it. Like someone said, this is America, and there's freedom of speech. That also means people can criticize.

Funny you dare me to use the 'n' word. Sorry, that's beneath me. Why would you dare me if I'm the one that told you it's inappropriate.

Mature audience? Last I checked, mature people don't openly use racial slurs and derogatory terms. It doesn't add anything to the conversation. I don't care what you do in private, but your words here are public and people do react. But like I said, whatever, it's your site.

Count me out though. See ya.

HJC: "OK Jeff, if you guys post something about 22" spinners and unsprung weight, then someone mentions the "n" word in a comment, I dare you guys to let the post through."

So wasn't it HJC who first dared Jeff to post the "n" word, and when Jeff called his bluff and dares him to post it, he says, "Sorry, that's beneath me."

That's like one of those kids who says, "I dare you to to go off that jump with me." And when you say okay, he chickens out and says, " Well, I would but my handle bars are loose."

And when HJC associates 22" spinners with the "n" word, isn't he stereo typing? Why didn't he associate a time attack car with the "n" word.

HJC: "If you guys want to be known as a bunch of foul mouthed, unprofessional, bigoted jackasses, so be it."

Foul mouthed I agree with, but unprofessional is illogical. You guys would not have the jobs you have, or have had, if you were unprofessional. You would have been canned a long time ago and unable to be where you are now.

I think some people are getting confused to the fact that you guys are posting things in the same language that you would use when shooting the shit around the garage. And I'm sure that most people get that because the complaints have been very very few. Only the very few expect this place to be PC respectable. They obviously don't know that when you guys appear on TV or write for a mag the bull shitting stops.

I bet that more than one F1 or Le Mans team member is cheating on his wife or sleeps with whores even though they always show a PC respectable face to the public at all times.

I want this place to have the best tech on the net. I don't particularly care if it isn't politically correct as 99% of our readers have a sense of humor. This isn't a high class place, was never intended to be one, just a haven for smart automotive people or people who want to learn about tech stuff.

HJC, if you are still around, how is chinaman derogatory and FOB not? We want the high class person perspective because we are are too ignorant to distinguish the difference on the insult insensitive meter.

Eric, I think the problem is that no matter many educated non-racist people can be and have the ability to ideologically differentiate between people from Hong Kong & the Brit culture that was there, etc. to the rest of white America (and, frankly to anyone else in the rest of the world) you're still Chinese. For all intensive purposes, east of the Mississippi , I'm "Chinese" for all intensive purposes, and I'm Filipino. So for the sake of toning down the unnecessary hate mongering, it is probably better to just go after perpetrators of knock-off's from anywhere, vs. going anti-Chinese. Especially since the Koreans are coming too. And then the South Africans & Brazilians.

I forgot to add, that I've come to the conclusion that the real culprits of that keep these knock-off guys in China & Taiwan going are the guys in New Zealand and Australia. They've legitimized the parts by buying off the shelf knock-offs & re-badging them under some brand they're building without any R&D at all. It also doesn't help that many of the Japanese brands are getting OEM'd out of China. Now that HKS, Greddy & the rest of the lot are well below their old historical buying volumes. Their old contract factories are left to fill the void by offering the parts off the old tooling to everyone else. And let's also not forget that China has a huge population with a growing middle class. They sell this stuff to their domestic tuning market too. However, less & less factories actually want to make this stuff anymore because their capacity is being used up to work with the domestic OEM's in China.

Eric: I don't know man. I think you rubbed off on Mike. I don't think I could ever club a fur seal unless it was necessary for my survival. It would be like clubbing a dog to death when it wanted attention. I think most people wouldn't have the stomach for that being that we get all our meat pre-killed. I think it would take a lot to even club a cow to death. Hearing the animal scream for it's life while you're breaking it's bones. That stuff will haunt you.

ahhahahaha... i just discovered this site today and i came across this topic.

seriously, that's the problem we have here in america. regardless of the issue, if it has to do with any countries that we'd love to hate... there's racial slurs and belittling comments.

this just shows that we as a population in US, generally are ignorant and can't hold a conversation about the issue at hand without getting all bend out of shape to hate on an ethnic group.

like some of the smart ones previously posted, the spamming can come out of anywhere. in this case, it just happened to be china. tomorrow it could be some guy in texas sitting in front of his tv watching brokeback mountain that's spamming the sites. so are we going to go anti-american tomorrow?

so in lack of better words... stop hating.

The majority of the worlds spam comes first from China, then Eastern Europe then India/Pakistan and finally Nigeria. However the most persistent and the greatest waste of our time is China.

We are attacked almost daily from China. Its not a guy in Texas. China is a big producer of crappy and sometimes dangerous products, a big stealer of intellectual property and the worlds biggest producer of spam and computer crime.

People that use the word hating and haters really annoy me.
Monday, October 04, 2010 6:57 AM
Alright, so the majority of "crap" came from China, that's an opinion, and i respect that. Hating or not, but whenever any community is discussing topics like such, someone must chime in their racial or ethnicity opinion about people in certain countries are undereducated or have no morals. That's not fair for the general public for the entire country rather than focusing on a specific few that's causing the harm.

How do we like it when the Europeans say..."you american this and you americans that"? Well, not all of us are like such the Europeans describe, but they generalize the entire US population to be the target of their hate.

People using word "hating" or "haters" annoy you? Well, people that generalize the entire ethnic group to be bad "annoys" me.

A lot of companies in China have no business morals, no respect for patents and intellectual property and thats a fact. A lot of Chinese companies have no respect for their employees health, the local environment, their customers well being, only money. A lot of garbage on the Internet comes from China, thats a fact. These are facts, not opinions. As anyone in the high performance or web business and they will tell you. In fact you can ask just about anyone in manufacturing and they will tell you about Chinese violating their IP and patent rights.

Its not a stereotype, its a fact.

Well if you read the article, it is an apology to our normal Chinese fans for us having to periodically block all traffic from China due to the tons of spammers that attack us from there.

Sorry if you are butthurt but these are the facts of business and a lot of problems in business come from China.

Of course the US consumer is to blame as well because they buy the crap that gets imported but that is due to consumer ignorance creating a demand that is undermining a lot of Americas industry. China is so entwined with the US economy anyway as they prop up the value of the dollar.

In a short view of how it affects us, Chinese stuff is ruining the high performance industry and Chinese spam makes our life here hell as well.
Wednesday, October 06, 2010 1:44 PM
Very well said. I absolutely agree with you on every point that you've touched. The purpose of my first comment (ever on this fun site) is that I was simply annoyed towards those whom like to dish out racial slurs at any given opportunity.

I also absolutey agree with you on the "fact" that "alot" of poorly constructed/manufactured products originated from China. However, "alot" does not translate to "all". Depending on what industry is discussed and what type of business is discussed, not all Chinese companies have bad morals or have no regards to the environment or any other global stake holders.

You're also correct about the US consumer is partially to blame, because there has to be a demand in order for these "crappy" products to be manufactured and supplied.

Now lets look at it one step further, someone on our (US) side must be bridging this supply and demand gap by bringing them over. Someone must be ordering these "crappy" products from China. Who are these people that are bringing them over? Did the low moral Chinese businesses in China one day just decided to load up ship and send them our way without someone on US's side taking delivery?

I am not defending those whom are spamming websites and those whom are really making bad products just to turn a dime. This is not a matter of who's getting butt hurt, it's a matter of a complicated world we live in and that not one side is completely at fault. When simple minded people just jumped on the name-calling (quote "Stupid Chinese... Screwing up the whole world, one area at a time."), that's what annoys me.
