Since Technosquare is the official shop of MotoIQ, we are often there many time a week working on various projects.  Technosquare has many customers ranging from street car modifiers to pro race teams and everything in-between.

Sometimes Technosquare has customers from the entertainment industry and yesterday we got to see a very unusual vehicle that they were working on.  This car is an EVO VIII that has been modified by Pursuit Systems as a camera car for the Movies and TV. The car has been used for such movies as The Fast and the Furious 4 among others.

When researching suspension modifications for the STi, we came upon the name of the Australian company Whiteline several times and when studying their website found quite a few unique and innovative suspension products available for the STi and many other cars as well. With this information in hand, we sought them out at the SEMA show and met Jim Gurieff, Whiteline’s General Director. Over Dinner we had quite an interesting conversation on the technical aspects of suspension turning.


The Sweet Scent of…Coolant? Project Racer Part 6

Ah the sweet scent of victory. Or is it burning coolant? A smell reminiscent of warm apple cider, yet a scent which can make your heart sink to the bottom of your stomach by the imminent doom it foretells.  Black smoke, white smoke, the distinct smell of hot oil and burning coolant; these are the tell tale signs of your car communicating to you that something's gone wrong, and in my case very wrong.


MotoIQ's Project Scion TC Wins in Speed World Challenge!

Our Project Scion TC, fresh from its victory at the NASA PTC National Championships continued its winning streak by dominating in its inaugural outing in Speed World Challenge's new Touring Car 2 class last weekend October 9-11 at Mazda Speedway (Laguna Seca) in Monterey California, the seasons finale.

Veteran racer Scott Webb, took the win during the 50-minute Touring Car race.  The TRD supercharged and intercooled Scion tC put on a great show for tens of thousands of fans, as he not only won the class, but actually mixed it up with the faster class TC cars. For Laguna Seca, team manager and two-time NASA national champion driver, Dan Gardner, had decided that Webb’s experience at the track made him the best fit to pedal the car.

Cheston Chiu’s turbo Nissan 350Z is well known in the Nissan Z community as being a fast well rounded machine.  Cheston’s car is more than just good looking, its been the runner up in Sport Compact Car’s Ultimate Street Car Challenge, placing just 10 skinny points out of first place.


Project Honda Ruckus part 3, 50 mph or bust!

When we last left Project Honda Ruckus, our first performance mods which included a Yoshimura pipe and a Bowls PC20 big bore carburetor kit had increased the top speed of our Ruckus from a pathetic 37 mph stock to a more reasonable 45 mph. However this was not fast enough to safely cruise on the fast streets of Orange County. The acceleration to reach this top speed was pretty lame as well. We had to get more speed, for safety and to be able to smoke the snobby Vespa riders in our area that would turn up their noses at our little Honda.


Project EVO X: Part 1 - Suspension

What does the guy that has the Ultimate Streetcar do for a daily driver?  Cheston Chiu is no stranger to building some really sick iron.  His super clean, built to the hilt twin turbo 350Z is no show car.  The Z placed second, missing first place by less than a point in Sport Compact Car Magazine’s Ultimate Street Car Contest and repeated the performance when the USCC torch was handed to Modified Magazine after SCC’s demise. Since the Z is a bit extreme to be a daily driver, Cheston wanted something nice but not as boring as his Maxima beater.  The car still had to have some potential for some nice modifications but nothing that would render the car impractical as a daily driver.  After considering several different options, Cheston settled on a 2010 Mitsubishi EVO X.  The biggest reason was the twin clutch TC-SST transmission.

When we launched MotoIQ, I wrote another article on this subject but it sorta got buried in our initial rush of article releases and since it never appeared on our front page, it languished with almost no reads deep within our tech section.  I think this subject is too interesting to remain buried so this month I am devoting Nerds to  the subject of Nissan's new oil technology. The new Nissan 370 and the Infiniti G37 with the VQ37VHR engine has been plagued with issues regarding high oil temperatures in severe use since their launch making debate on oil a big topic on internet forums. The conversations on oil temperature issues leads to Nissan's recommendations for Genuine Nissan "ester" based oil and the super expensive oil service.

To say that our Pathfinder sucked on power was an understatement.  Our Pathfinder could not beat anything in any contest of speed, except for perhaps another SUV.  Joggers and bicyclists gave it trouble.  It guzzled fuel like a turbo car on boost as well turning in a miserable 15 MPG around town and 19 mpg on the highway.   When attempting to tow, entering the freeway was a scary proposition and you had to depend on the mercy of other motorists and you all know that LA drivers basically have no mercy.

By nature a differential wants to send all of the engines power to the wheel with the least amount of traction, the path of least resistance. The side effect of this is unwanted inside wheel-spin out of corners, and even single wheel spin on straight-aways (aka: peg-legging, one-tire-fire, etc…). This greatly affects acceleration since the power is not able to be put to the ground efficiently and is lost through the inside unloaded tire.

Jim Wolf Technology Releases Nissan VG30DE/DET Mechanical Cam

Jim Wolf Technology has introduced their mechanical cam for the VG30D series NissanV6 twin cam engines. JWT’s mechanical cam is the biggest, most aggressive and the most powerful VG cam on the market. The JWT mechanical cam has the most area under the lift and duration curve for the ultimate in volumetric efficiency. Area under the curve is what makes power and torque and is more meaningful than simple lift and duration numbers.
