Nice setup! I like the badge and I like the cleanliness of the bay! Simple and functional! A friend of mine had a similar setup on his spec a few years back and that car was a blast! He went by specme on the v board.... |

You know first hand how friendly and knowledgeable of a group B15 owners and forums are. I think my new home is going to be between here and twofivetuning.com I've got some stuff up my sleeve for the car soon. Most of it will just be fabrication show and tell and a budget engine build. |

Eventuall plans for the car............. continue to torture the current motor, LateApex can verify the level of abuse my car takes. Mainly for a fabrication show and tell.......... 1/2 width raidator from a mid 1960's Ford Falcon, half width ac condensor from a Civic, custom near equal length twin pulse bottom mount turbo manifold, turbo inlet rotated towards front of car, 3-3.5" DP, 2007 internals w/ milled Frontier pistons, UpRev ECU flash Tuning bundle (will finally be installed soon), VQ35HR valve springs, 6800-7000 rpm redline, 2002 Maxima final drive in the tranny, fuel pump upgrade. The motor build w/ my hook up prices should come in under $2K and should support 400hp, which is just a nice round number. The new cooling and turbo gear, if I just swap turbine housings, under $1k.

that's a turbonetics kit correct? it looks very much like my girls '03 spec. if it's not, what kit is it? or did you fabricate it yourself? |

Posted By 23doctor on 06-25-2009 08:22 AM that's a turbonetics kit correct? it looks very much like my girls '03 spec. if it's not, what kit is it? or did you fabricate it yourself? A little of both. It started in 2006 iirc. At the time it was established it cost a minimum of about $5,000 to turbo one of these cars, if not closer to 7k. I didn't have 5k, but I wanted a turbo'd car........ so I started researching and figured if I fabricated everything I could, and used used, or Ebay parts I could turbo the car for under $1500. I'm not a big fan of E-bay parts for various reasons, but that's something else all together. I looked at the turbonetics design and at several of the small label kits out and decided on what I wanted to do, and what I wanted to do differently. I took about 2 weeks from the time I had all the raw parts until I had everything mocked, fabbed, and up and running. It was the 1/2 NPT tap that put me over budget, it came in around $1540. It was my second big fab/design/welding project, my first one was a ground up gokart powered by a 1980 Suzuki RM180 motor.......... stupid stupid fast. I got bored over a summer break in college. 33hp at 13,500 rpms, and 6 gears, it never got run in any gear higher than 4th gear, lol. I learned the importance of caster in suspension geometry the first time the front end got wiggly hammering down on it. Oh the memories. Fast foreward, about 6 months and I was approached by Treadstone Performance, we worked out a deal, bam. I refabbed some parts to work around new top shelf components, recirculated the WG dump, and redesigned the down pipe to bolt to a factory exhaust. Made some minor tweaks, done. The kit under my hood is kit #1, it has over 30,000 miles on it. I'll be starting on a B16 Spec V turbo real soon, and if i could get my hands on a 2.5 Altima coupe for a few weeks, it'd be on. I just play mainly. |

funny, didn't know about J's go cart experience. My plan is to build a go cart with some sort of small power plant. I would really LOVE to do a QR25/VQ35 powered go cart, but offering that up to the wife would hurt. She is behind building a GY6 for the kid, and building the absolute piss out of a one cylinder is so much cheaper than building a 4-6 cylinder, although a VQ35 mid engine RWD go cart would be an absolute blast to drive. -JNY |

You know first hand how friendly and knowledgeable of a group B15 owners and forums are. even i remember how they are, from way way way back when i had my 03 spec-v. (wow, 6 years ago already?) so how has the qr25 turned out to be, strength and reliability-wise? i haven't kept up on it at all since then, but the speculation at the time IIRC was that it was a bit weak. i didn't have any trouble whatsoever with mine; course i already sold it at 11K miles. and at least at that time there were was next to no engine aftermarket beyond I/H/E |

The QR motor is a good motor, people simply expect too from them, or just don't know that it takes a little know how to make them hold over twice the stock output with a turbo and not break stuff, which they will do just fine. They don't even grasp the concept that dropping in bigger injectors and tweaking out twice the power w/o tripping a check engine light or having to do anything much else to keep the ECU happy is a testament to the car its self and the lack of headaches in doing so is a blessing. Sure Nissan had some serious issues with some dumb design features, mostly emissions related, but the improvements made in the mid 2004 model year did a lot to end those problems. The aftermarket still sucks, but it's a byproduct of lack of intelligence, ingenuity, and willingness to spend money that has kept it that way. In NA form the motor still has serious limitations mainly because of the aforementioned intelligence deficit and and lack of money to spend, companies simply don't want to do jack, and I don't blame them. 7 years in production and there are no verifications of any NA motor (save for RTR) passing the 200WHP mark, sad, especially seeing they are rated at 180 from the factory and have such a large displacement. I should be working with a car racing time attack in NASA to put together a decent NA race motor for next season, we'll see what comes out of it. |
