The Spoon Center Drive Civic: 2017 Changes

by Mike Kojima

2016 was a pretty disappointing Super Lap Battle for Spoon USA.  In the rush after the Formula D season to upgrade the cage, repair the broken transmission and switch to a center seat driving position, the car was not fully ready for the 2016 Super Lap Battle and it showed with a slower lap time than it's winning 2015 speed. A little time was needed to finish the car off and that was not happening due to the end of the FD season, SEMA and everyone's time commitments.

480WHP Honeywell Garrett Powered F20C: Devin Giles' Time Attack S2000

by Khiem Dinh

It all starts the same way. “I want to go auto-crossing!” you say. So, you start browsing the interwebs and research the S2000. You start auto-crossing and start modding and moving through the classes. Then, you do a track day. Then, you mod the car some more. Then, you do time attack. Then, you end up with a highly built race car like Devin Giles- owner and driver of this fast S2000. It’s a familiar path; there’s probably a support group for it out there.

Unpimp My Ride: Transforming a Modded BRZ Into a Civilized Daily Driver with Pedders, Verus Engineering and ARK Designs

by Mike Kojima

Not all of us want a race car for the street. Although many of us are hardcore track day participants, autocrossers or canyon runner nuts, there are a lot of enthusiasts who don't want a super edgy race car with a license plate as a commuter or daily driver.

LA Auto Show 2017: Nerd’s Eye View – Porsche

by Khiem Dinh

I was short on time this year at the LA Auto Show, so I had to do a bit of a blitzkrieg. The one booth I have to visit every year is Porsche because the cars are simply awesome. In addition to the GT2RS, Porsche was highlighting the Cayman and Boxster GTS siblings, 911 Carrera T, and a few 4-door sedans. I got sucked into the GT2RS and almost completely ignored all the other cars.

Honda S1000: How To Install A Motorcycle Engine in a Car

by Matt Brown

It is well established that:  Small Car + Big Engine = Hot Rod. The bigger the engine and the smaller the recipient vehicle, the hotter the rod. Putting a 1.8 liter in your Honda CRX? Mild hot rod. Putting a Space Shuttle SRB in your Peel P50? The hottest of rods. Installing a motorcycle engine in a car seems to be a violation of this rule. I hope you will agree with me after reading this article: it is anything but.

All-Season Versus Winter Tires: A Racecar Driver's Consensus

Presented by Tire Rack and Michelin

by Karla Pestotnik

I think I can comfortably say that I’ve used all-season tires in almost any creative scenario that I can think of. I’ve used them on a racetrack countless times in several different cars, trying to drive as cleanly as possible with minimal grip in search of the best possible lap time for each given platform. I’ve used them as “rain tires” because that is what was available at the time and had better water dispersion than race slicks in a sprint race with down pouring rain. I’ve done some off-roading with them on trucks, SUVs and even vans, and had my fair share of times getting stuck in sand and/or mud with them (a few occasions with a trailer connected even). I have even used them for what they are generally intended for- you know, normal driving in a regular passenger car on public roads and highways. However, after attending the Winter Driving Event that Tire Rack and Michelin hosted, I can now say that I have used all-season tires in ice drag racing!

We did several comparison tests to evaluate whether or not it's worth it to buy winter tires, considering how versatile all-season tires can be. What does a racecar driver have to say about it? Click to find out!
