The Sweet Scent of…Coolant? Project Racer Part 6

by Annie Sam

Ah the sweet scent of victory. Or is it burning coolant? A smell reminiscent of warm apple cider, yet a scent which can make your heart sink to the bottom of your stomach by the imminent doom it foretells.  Black smoke, white smoke, the distinct smell of hot oil and burning coolant; these are the tell tale signs of your car communicating to you that something's gone wrong, and in my case very wrong.

MotoIQ's Project Scion TC Wins in Speed World Challenge!

MotoIQ Staff Report

Our Project Scion TC, fresh from its victory at the NASA PTC National Championships continued its winning streak by dominating in its inaugural outing in Speed World Challenge's new Touring Car 2 class last weekend October 9-11 at Mazda Speedway (Laguna Seca) in Monterey California, the seasons finale.

Veteran racer Scott Webb, took the win during the 50-minute Touring Car race.  The TRD supercharged and intercooled Scion tC put on a great show for tens of thousands of fans, as he not only won the class, but actually mixed it up with the faster class TC cars. For Laguna Seca, team manager and two-time NASA national champion driver, Dan Gardner, had decided that Webb’s experience at the track made him the best fit to pedal the car.

A Look Inside Dai Yoshihara’s Team Falken Pro Drift Machine

By Mike Kojima

A comment from one of my road racing friends prompted me to write this article. He said as a snide remark "I heard you are now involved with drifting, too bad those are not real race cars". No amount of arguing could convince him that a typical pro drift car is a sophisticated machine, one several times more massaged and engineered than his own race car.  So lets take a look inside Dai Yoshihara's Lexus IS350 that he drives for Team Falken and Discount Tire on the Formula D Circuit.

Summer Road Trip- Silver State Classic Part 1

By Mike Kojima and Annie Sam

The end of summer usually means two things; one, it’s the end of summer and two, it’s time for a road trip.  The MotoIQ staff usual tries to have a least one epic road trip automotive adventure during the summer months and this year it was a trip to the country’s greatest open road race, the Silver State Classic in Nevada.  The Silver State is a must do for any automotive freak; it’s a 100 mile all out road race across closed highway in Nevada.

MotoIQ Staff Report

Photos by www.headonphotos.net

This past Sunday, our own Project Scion tC campaigned by the JD Scion Road Racing team put another mark in the history books, winning a second consecutive national championship in NASA’s Performance Touring series. Perhaps most impressive was the fact that the team started in dead last and managed to climb back through the field and win the race.

MotoIQ Staff Report

A little understood fact about prepping a turbo car for reliable track use is that extreme cooling is needed and the off the shelf performance radiators and oil coolers on the market are not enough to keep a turbo engine cool under actual track conditions. The VQ35DE engine is kept cool by a custom Ron Davis C&R core dual pass radiator with swirl tank and large 13 row Setrab oil cooler.

Demolition Derby Tech part 2 The Science Behind the Horror

By Mike Kojima and Aaron Guardado

After we prepared two cars as seen in part one of this series. We proceeded to enter them in a destruction derby, the infamous Orange Crush event at the Orange County fair. We faired ok, making it through most of the event with only minor injuries despite the car’s taking some enormous punishment.
